How Does Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback Work?
Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback uses five electrodes that are purposefully placed on the skin of the client. These electrodes are connected to a software system that detects and reads the client’s current brainwaves. The practitioner then chooses an individualized treatment specific to the client, this sends a small microcurrent signal back to the client’s brain. This undetectable signal allows the brain to “reboot” and correct the “stuck” patterns. The process is similar to rebooting a computer when it freezes.
Each session of Direct Neurofeedback is activating the parasympathetic nervous system- the nervous system our body naturally uses to calm and bring us back to homeostasis and decreasing the “fight, flight or freeze” response from our sympathetic nervous system. These two parts of the nervous system are needed in the body- the sympathetic nervous system helps us make decisions and conserve energy when we are faced with a high stress situation- like being approached by a bear in the woods. However, because of constant stressors in day to day life, the sympathetic nervous system is overreacting the same to every day stresses as it would to life or death situation.
Longer lasting positive improvements are the result of the brain regaining a neuro-chemical homeostasis and developing a natural resistance to returning to a dysfunctional state.

Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback vs. Traditional Neurofeedback
The easiest way to differentiate between Traditional Neurofeedback and Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback:
Traditional Neurofeedback is “retraining” your brain while Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback is “disrupting” negative patterns in the brain to obtain a healthy baseline.
Both types of neurofeedback use sensors on the head to gather an electroencephalogram (EEG) of the clients’ brain.
Traditional Neurofeedback uses reinforcements tools, like sounds or lights, to “reward” the brain for being in the desired brainwave pattern.
Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback simply sends a small signal to the brain that interrupts it from making unwanted brain waves-without any effort or concentration from the client.
Microcurrent Direct Neurofeedback
- client is passive as the treatment changes brain wave patterns
- client does not need to be attentive or focused during session to get results
- small signal sent back to the brain
- retrains stuck patterns in brain
- initial results noted in 1-2 sessions
- sessions last 15-30 minutes
- typically 15-20 sessions needed for full treatment
Traditional Neurofeedback
- client actively focuses on changing brain wave patterns
- client is concentrating and attentive during session to get results
- no signal sent back to brain
- trains the brain to move towards desirable frequencies
- initial results 6-10 sessions
- session last 45-60 minutes
- typically 40-60 sessions needed for full treatment
